Repeat Prescription: Extended Release

Repeat Prescription: Extended Release is a deeper exploration into Repeat Prescription’s techniques, materials, and themes through a series of brooches that continue the dialogue between protection, dependence, and adornment. This  political collection of art jewellery explores relationships with and attitudes toward medicine. In the Western world, pharmaceuticals are deeply interwoven into our culture and lives from the moment we are born until we take our final breath. Misha McLean’s interest in the subject began at a young age when she was given an EpiPen after a severe allergic reaction. Amazed by this piece of life saving medical equipment, she became aware of the true power of modern medicine. While pharmaceuticals can greatly improve quality of life, they must be used with caution; misuse, addiction, and adverse side effects are just a few of the many dangers associated with prescription drugs. Using precious materials contrasted with bold and fluorescent bursts reminiscent of ’90s rave posters, Misha fuses contemporary techniques such as CAD modelling and 3D printing with traditional silversmithing skills to create talismanic, thought- provoking wearable art. The fluorescent Yttrium Aluminium Garnets she uses are repurposed offcuts from medical lasers, transformed for commercial use. By placing these gemstones back in the context of medicine Misha reinforces this dialogue between protection, dependence, and adornment.
